Revelation 2 – Thyatira (Dar and Kate)

  • Trade union city
  • You had to be a part of a union to work
• Revelation 2:18
  • Eyes like fire and feet like bronze
    • Jesus is full of condemnation and judgment for this church
    • You would be scared of Jesus if his eyes are on fire
    • Jesus can see right through the people
      • He doesn’t like what they are doing
      • Jesus can trample over sin and punish those who are instigating/allowing it to happen
  • Only time in the 7 letters that John called attention to the deity
    • Jesus is God
    • God of the universe
• Revelation 2:19
  • Every church has at least one redeeming quality
    • The church understands that love leads to serve
    • You can’t help but to serve
    • They also understand that faith leads to perseverence
      • His will will be done
  • But the problem is
    • The church is understanding this superficially
    • They are not taking it deep enough
  • The outside is busy but on the inside there is a lot of bad stuff going on
• Revelation 2:20-21
  • Big rebuking
  • They have a woman who is misleading them and undermining the teachings of God
    • BAD!
  • These people are just letting her do that
    • They are not telling her to step down
  • There is NOT a woman named Jezebel in this church
    • Jezebel in the Old Testament
      • While she was queen, she did a lot of evil things
        • Started a new religion with the fertility god
        • Established a lot of temples and prostitutes in the temples
        • God got angry because she was undermining what he was saying
          • He had her thrown from a palace window and eaten by dogs
      • Jezebel in the New Testament
        • Nick name
      • There is nothing wrong with having a woman prophet
        • But when she leads them astray, there is a big problem
• You had to attend these different meetings/parties to be a part of the city
  • Worship different gods
  • Erotic ceremonies
  • Temptations and laying on the pressure for Christians
  • So if you went, you would fall into temptation
  • Jezebel said it was mkay to be a part of this union
    • Better to go have work and compromise than starve
• Jesus is linking sexual immorality with idolatry
  • Somethings are taking the place of God
  • People in the church are encouraing this
• Revelation 2:22-23
  • Jezebel is an adultress
    • Jesus will give her a bed of suffering for her deeds
    • He is attempting to bring her to reprent
  • People who are with Jezebel
    • They will suffer intensely
    • But we do not know how they will suffer
  • The children are practicing and teaching what Jezebel taught them
    • Their consequence is pestilence
      • Disease
      • They refuse to repent
  • God always tries to give you chances to repent
    • Unfortunately, we are very slow learners
    • He will welcome us back, but if we keep on our current path we will suffer
    • God will discipline
      • It’s loving but hard
      • God wants to help!
