Romans 5 part 2 (Joel and Mike)
- Teaching 10.26.10
- Romans 5 is all about our identity connection with the Lord
- This is why we are the way we are
- Romans 5:12
- “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned“
- This is where our identity comes from
- Sinned entered one man
- Adam from Genesis 3
- This really shows us that Adam went against God’s leadership when he ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil
- Adam is taking the solo path
- We did the same thing as Adam did
- We did not repeat this error that Adam caused; we were affected by his doing
- God warned Adam that if he ate from the tree that he would die
- Not physical death, a spiritual death
- “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned“
- Romans 5:17
- “For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.”
- Death reigned
- We are all alienated from God
- It is Adam’s fault that we are the way we are
- This is the identity connection
- Death reigned
- “For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.”
- Romans 5:19
- “For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.”
- Made sinners
- Not saying that we sin too
- Adam’s one sin was enough to cause humanity to suffer
- We are born with the tendency to reject the Lord’s authority
- We want to live at the expense of other people
- Matthew 23:25
- “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence.”
- That is just dumb just cleaning the outside
- Does not matter how much you clean the outside
- Their hearts were so wicked and cruel
- They tried to put on their best outward appearance
- But Jesus saw right through their clean clothes
- “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence.”
- Psalms 51:5
- “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.”
- We are born with a sinful nature… Why?
- Because we are human beings
- We are born with a sinful nature… Why?
- “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.”
- Ephesians 2:1-3
- “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.”
- This is what spiritual deadness looks like
- It is not enough to change what you do
- You got to change who you are
- “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.”
- There is no clear evidence that we all are connected with God
- But we do have enough facts to show us that we have a sinful nature
- Adam’s actions affected us!
- Is that fair?
- Made sinners
- “For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.”
- How do we get rid of this sinful nature?
- Death
- Romans 6:23
- “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”
- Romans 6:23
- Death
- Romans 5:17 vs. Romans 5:19
- Parallel
- Romans 5:18
- “So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.”
- When one person screwed you over…
- Another saved you!
- God wants to switch our identity from a your connection with Adam to a connection with Jesus Christ
- 1 Corinthians 15:21-22
- “For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.”
- 1 Corinthians 15:21-22
- “So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.”
- Romans 5:18
- Parallel
- Romans 6:3-4
- “Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.”
- Baptized = put into
- “Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.”
- Matthew 3:11-12
- “As for me, I baptize you a with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
- John the Baptist is speaking
- He is baptizing people to show that they are repenting
- He is talking about Jesus coming after him
- He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire
- John the Baptist is speaking
- “As for me, I baptize you a with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear His threshing floor; and He will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
- 1 Corinthians 12:13
- “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.”
- Baptized by one spirit into one body
- “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.”
