Genesis 10 and 11
Teaching 4-8-10
- Genesis 10:8-12
- “Cush was the father of Nimrod, who grew to be a mighty warrior on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; that is why it is said, ‘Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD.’ The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, Erech, Akkad and Calneh, in Shinar. From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city.”
- Learning about Nimrod
- Wouldn’t just interrupt the genealogy just to introduce Nimrod
- He established the very first empire and started many cities
- Genesis 11:1-9
- “Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. They said to each other, ‘Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.’ They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.’ But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. The LORD said, ‘If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.’ So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel—because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.”
- Was not called Babel because of Babylon
- Not mythology either
- Genesis 9:1
- “Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.”
- God did NOT want them to stay in one spot so he made them have different languages
- He did it because he knows they’ll all turn against him
- He didn’t want to create another flood
- When people turn their back on God, the level of depravity can be extremely deep
- Are they trying to build a tower to Heaven?
- Genesis 11:4-King James Version
- “And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”
- They are trying to build a tower into Heaven!!!
- Animism: belief in stars and planets being deities
- Pantheism: belief in inanimate objects being deities
- There are so many different religions…
- You can believe whatever religion you want
- Don’t be putting others down… BAD!
- WRONG
- You can talk to others about how their religion is different from yours
- But don’t use harsh words and be intelligent
- Romans 1:25
- “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.”
- People are worshiping others that aren’t God
- Isaiah 44:18-19
- “They know nothing, they understand nothing; their eyes are plastered over so they cannot see, and their minds closed so they cannot understand. No one stops to think, no one has the knowledge or understanding to say, ‘Half of it I used for fuel; I even baked bread over its coals, I roasted meat and I ate. Shall I make a detestable thing from what is left? Shall I bow down to a block of wood?’”
- People were worshipping pieces of wood
- HOW STUPID!
- People are pushing God aside
- They’re treating God like he is only contained in nature
- “When I need you, maybe I’ll call on you”
- “I’ll talk to God whenever I want”
- WRONG!
- God doesn’t want to crush our dreams
- He wants to give us a way out
- God had to send the flood because those generations were so corrupted
- It’s happening again but the people are worshipping other deities
- God doesn’t want to have to wipe out another generation
- How does God redeem them?
- Give them different languages
- God wasn’t trying to cause all this craziness
- He was trying to stop us from destroying ourselves
- If God would have let them go, there would be no God in our generation
- We would be so lost without God
