Genesis 2
Teaching 2.25.10
- Genesis 2:4-6
- “This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens- and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground, but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground-”
- No man is there to cultivate
- Genesis 2:7
- “The LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”
- God created man
- Scientists disagree with this
- God is a loving god, he loves every single
- Ephesians 2:4-5
- “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.”
- God really does care
- What makes us different?
- Genesis 1:27
- “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”
- Genesis 1:26
- “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
- He gives us significance and we are important to Him
- We can also rule humans (but not in a monarchy)
- How did God rule?
- He sent His son to die for us
- He didn’t benefit from that but He still did it
- WE NEED PURPOSE
- This is how we’re different from animals
- Animals are only instinctive
- Genesis 2:8-14
- “Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.) The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.”
- Garden of Eden is BEAUTIFUL and all for Adam
- Genesis 2:15
- “The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”
- God made us to work
- Sounds sucky…. BUT it wasn’t
- God gave Adam PURPOSE
- We want to work… whether or not we admit it
- Genesis 2:16-17
- “And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”
- Does this sound mean/bad?
- It gave Adam a choice/free will
- Adam had the WHOLE garden so it shouldn’t be that hard to follow God
- God gives us a HUGE choice…
- To accept grace from God or not?
- It’s up to you
- Revelation 3:20
- “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”
- God is at the door waiting for you to make the decision
- Genesis 2:18-20
- “The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.”
- Adam was creative and God made Adam to be that creative
- Gave Adam leadership
- Genesis 2:21-25
- “So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman, ‘ for she was taken out of man.” For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.”
- We as humans are relational and God gave that to us
- So God gave Eve to Adam
- What is marriage?
- Becoming one flesh
- Describes marriage very well
- What is marriage?
- What is the Trinity?
- Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit
- This is why God is so relational!
- Also makes Him more powerful that any other God
- Sex…
- God wants you to enjoy sex WITHIN marriage
- Having mutiple partners is DAMAGING
- Sweet gift from God
- Something went wrong… that is why we’re not in Eden right now…
- Eventually we will go back to the garden
- But not right now…
