- Teaching 10.19.10
- Romans 5:1
- “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,”
- Protestant Reformation started by Martin Luther
- He was reading and studying Romans and this verse blew his mind
- We get to heaven by having grace through Jesus Christ
- Catholic Church was saying that you had to work to get to heaven
- Carries the thought from the previous chapter
- Previous chapter was about faith
- Biblical faith
- Willingness to act based on God’s truth, with complete dependence on Him to perform it for you
- Romans 3:23
- “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
- Romans 4:3
- “For what does the Scripture say? ‘ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.’”
- Romans 4:24-25
- “But for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.
- Justified means that we have been acquitted
- We are acquitted by God through faith
- “But for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.
- “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,”
- Romans 5:2
- “Through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.”
- Through whom we have gained access
- Jesus did all these things for us like dying on the cross
- And thanks to him, we have access to the Lord
- Hope does not mean some vague notion
- It means that we assume we know what is going to happen
- Hope in the glory of God
- Referring to our future life in Christ
- Through whom we have gained access
- “Through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.”
- Romans 5:3
- “And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;”
- We have this phrase ‘exult in our tribulations’
- Why are we talking about suffering?
- You have this suffering, but it leads back to hope
- No matter how much suffering you go through, there is hope that God will help
- Suffering is a part of the Christian walk
- But everyone suffers
- We have a choice…
- You can either wallow in your own misery… OR
- You can give it all up to God and just let him lead your life
- We have this phrase ‘exult in our tribulations’
- “And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;”
- Romans 5:4
- “And perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope;”
- Progression from verse 3 that leads to hope in the end
- Perseverance à Character à Hope
- What is so great about this hope?
- “And perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope;”
- Romans 5:5
- “And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
- More anticipation than not knowing
- It does NOT disappoint
- Why is hope so worth it?
- Because it leads to love!
- More anticipation than not knowing
- Colossians 1:4-5
- “Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love which you have for all the saints; because of the hope laid up for you in heaven, of which you previously heard in the word of truth, the gospel”
- Love for the saints
- “Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love which you have for all the saints; because of the hope laid up for you in heaven, of which you previously heard in the word of truth, the gospel”
- 1 Corinthians 13:13
- “But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
- Love is the MOST important
- “But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.”
- How does hope produce love?
- A lot of people do not want to think about what is going to happen when they die
- It is going to happen but it is depressing thinking about it
- For non-believers, you are here for like seventy years then you are gone
- Ecclesiastes 6:12
- “For who knows what is good for a man during his lifetime, during the few years of his futile life? He will spend them like a shadow. For who can tell a man what will be after him under the sun?
- What if we got to live for 4 more years?
- Would it really make a difference?
- You are here but what are you going to do?
- What really is here for us?
- There is not much
- It is negative but it is what it is
- God’s view it eternal life with real significance
- If you accepted Christ then you will go to heaven and be a part of God’s eternal plan
- While the church view is building buildings and putting importance in the temporary world
- What significance is in the temporary world?
- What if we got to live for 4 more years?
- “For who knows what is good for a man during his lifetime, during the few years of his futile life? He will spend them like a shadow. For who can tell a man what will be after him under the sun?
- A lot of people do not want to think about what is going to happen when they die
- “And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
- 1 John 4:8-9
- “The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.”
- God is all about love through Christ and his sacrifice
- Once you accept Christ you can have this hope and love
- You should not go an invest in the temporary world
- Nothing significant there
- God is all about love through Christ and his sacrifice
- “The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.”
- Temporary vs. Eternal
- Temporary
- Take what I can and get what I can
- Eternal
- You do not take, you give
- Temporary
- Hope leads to LOVE
